Comment on You’d Think They Would Have Learned! by AwarenessGal

Hi,
I'm a first-time blogger, so I hope I'm doing this right. I appreciate your commentary about movies like "Tropic Thunder" and "Blindness" and Hollywood's (and the ticket-buying, movie-going public's) lack of empathy. As you can tell from my screen name, I'm passionate about increased access to disability awareness training and the domino effect that it can have throughout numerous issues (jobs, housing, transportation, health care, movies, etc.).

I work at an Atlanta-based community rehabilitation program and we're working hard to increase access to disability awareness training in our community and then even beyond our state by providing (free!) disability awareness training. Since this is the activism board on your site, I wanted to find out if there are like-minded disability activists out there who also think that disability awareness training is a critical part to get the dialogue going. This isn't spam, just an effort to get grassroots help in spreading the word about the need for and availability of free disability awareness training. Info is below--please pass it on!

Spread the word! October is National Disability Awareness Month and an important time to help raise awareness that people with disabilities represent 20 percent of the American population and could easily be customers, job applicants, colleagues, friends, neighbors, and families. Disability 101 at http://www.bobbydodd.org is free online training that provides practical tips and insight to help businesses and communities better understand and be more inclusive of people with disabilities. Help connect your community to this free resource. Pass the link along to your local businesses, schools, chambers of commerce, friends, neighbors, etc. Let’s get the word out that people with disabilities are an important part of the American population!

Disability 101 is hosted on www.bobbydodd.org by Bobby Dodd Institute, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization that provides hands-on job training and employment opportunities to people with disabilities and disadvantages. In addition to the four modules of Disability 101, the site contains educational videos, survey data on disability-related perceptions and attitudes, and HR resources to aid in the hiring of people with disabilities.

Thanks! We can do it!

[...] April 3, 2008 From the Roving Activist, fiercely known as Dread1myn: You can’t even begin to talk about ADAPT without talking about Wade Blank. Wade was once an activities director in a nursing home called Heritage House This was the place where the original group that started ADAPT was incarcerated. Wade’s history of working for social justice and social change began long before then, but while at Heritage House, he listened to the dreams of the young folks trapped there, and ultimately helped them to free themselves, and move into the community. They founded Atlantis Community, the second oldest Independent Living Center in the nation. [...]
